I Have A Question About Retrograde Menstruation.
Hi all, I had an endoscopy a couple weeks ago to look for endometriosis. I was told I do not have it but that I had a fair amount of free-floating blood in my pelvis (100mls I think) and diagnosed with retrograde menstruation. This makes sense and I did feel much better after the surgery for about a week, at which point all the issues came back. The surgeon said if that happened we'd likely do a hysterectomy, which I'm fine with but I have one major question: I was not on my period at the timeā¦ read more
Join EndoMetropolis. You can post your surgery pics there and ask the question about retrograde menstration. An endo excision expert will comment about your pics and can answer that question. There are also many other knowledgeable women in that group that will be able to help more than me. I just thought retrograde menstration was a theory bc the only time I have ever heard about it was when they were talking about it causing endo, and they later found that the theory was incorrect. So I guess I shouldāve said itās only a theory (most likely not a true one) about the cause of endo. I honestly didnāt think that was actually possible.. but Iām definitely not a doctor!
oops, yes I did mean Laproscopy- darn autocorrect. I like my ob-gyn well enough and I joined the Nancy's Nook page and I really don't have a lot of endo symptoms like the people there do, I think my doc was expecting more to find an adhesion from a former abdominal surgery as a child or an enlarged uterus (suspicious on u/s) but she didn't find either. She took plenty of photos. So my question is solely about the retrograde menstruation at this point (which is definitely a real thing).
Wait... did you mean laparoscopy instead of endoscopy? Endoscopy is where there put a camera down your throat and look at your esophagus and stomach. It is impossible to see inside your pelvis with an endoscopy. With that being said... most regular gynās Are not qualified enough to recognize endo in all its forms. So itās very very possible that you still have endo, they just arenāt skilled enough to recognize it. I personally donāt know anything about retrograde menstration. Iām honestly not even sure if itās an actual real thing, or still just a theory. Iām not sure how they would be able to tell if you have retrograde menstration that long after your period. I will have to do more research on that. In the US less than 100 gynos out of 50,000 are qualified enough to recognize endo in all its forms and treat it properly. If you havenāt already, join Nancyās nook on Facebook. They have a list of international excision endo experts. They can diagnose the endo, and remove it in one surgery. Even if it isnāt endo, they are skilled enough to be able to figure out what is causing you problems. So I would try to consult with one of them. Especially before you agree to a hysterectomy.
