Visanne - Stopping This Med?

A MyEndometriosisTeam Member asked a question 💭

Hello! Im new here. I had my first @laparoscopy on 23rd Nov 17 (5 days ago) and finally got confirmed endometriosis diagnosis after 13 years of suffering. I was put on Visanne last year in about August, and immediately had really severe side effects. I tend to get extremely adverse side effects with any hormone type med - so whilst the pill has helped my pain and bleeding a lot, the side effects outweigh the benefit unfortunately for me. My gynae and GP have both just confirmed today that i can… read more

Thank you fornyour reply! I am npw off Visanne for about 2.5 months and feel like a different person. My gynae approved me coming off it after the surgery and once i got over about 2 weeks of awful withdrawals i really came good and just felt so so much better mentally. My hair has already started growing back HEAPS and i dropped a lot of weight already. But yeah the mental health improvement has been HUGE and i feel like i can never go back. Iv gotten my periods backs and yes they're still painful only being 2 months post opp but the bleeding is already far less after endo and polyp removal. So very torn about taking hormones in the future but will take it 1 day at a time

@A MyEndometriosisTeam Member After 3 months of taking Visanne I was pretty much suicidal. I had suicidal thoughts, I was aggressive, irritable and angry. My mood swings were crazy. I had to just stop it and was also advised by my doc to stop it immediately. Migraines were another issue I experienced. Proper brain-melting horror and they became more and more frequent. My advise is to stop taking it immediately.

I have to come off Visanne. My depression and migraines are becoming too severe and I need to find out if Visanne is causing them. I can’t find any information on anyone who has been on this medication as long as I have. I’m terrified the endometriosis will grow back, but the depression and constant migraines are now debilitating. Wish me luck.

@A MyEndometriosisTeam Member I actually found your post when I was looking for info on quitting Visanne. I stopped mine 2 months ago but I still have not had a period. The Visanne experience was pretty hellish and I started taking it to avoid the laparoscopy route. I wanted to mention that if the doctor advises the use of a Mirena - run! I was pretty suicidal on Visanne and my doc has advised against me taking any progesterone only pills (POPs) and high-dose progesterone contraceptives. Apparently females who are sensitive to progesterone or have PMDD go slightly nutty on Visanne and it's worse with a Mirena.

@chronciallyhannahI noticed your post about Visanne. I have been on it for three years. The first three months I almost gave up as the nausea, breast tenderness and migraines were excruciating. This medicine has been able to control my endometriosis and endometriomas. I have finally been able to excercise and regain some of my life. I have tried almost every treatment, and this is the only one that helped me. It has been three years since my last surgery and I have had over ten. We are all different, so one treatment might help me but another might help you better. I almost forgot to mention, I also take 10mg Lexapro. Having a chronic disease such as endometriomas makes the depression a very likely scenario whether due to Visanne or not. It is hard dealing with this disease and doctors are still very undeducated.

I am now trying to find out what long term problems may happen with Visanne and there is not too much published except for possible bone density issues, so I will schedule a scan with my GP. Best of luck.
