Is Severe Pain With A Pap Smear Common With Endo?

A MyEndometriosisTeam Member asked a question 💭

I had my first pap smear today, and it was nothing like what I expected. Literally everyone (my mom, sister, the doctor, etc.) told me to expect some discomfort but it wasn't painful at all so don't worry. Thankfully I didn't 100% believe them, since I'm fairly accustomed to *everything* that has to do with that region of my body causing me more pain than it's supposed to -- but it still hurt significantly worse than I anticipated. I experienced that too with internal ultrasounds and speculum. Even fingers hurt for me for ages. I went on medication to loosen my pelvic floor and I also bought medical dialators to help train my muscles to be more relaxed. Easier to follow tips for me is making sure I keep my hips down on the table while it's being inserted (a tip from my gyno) as I find my muscles more relaxed, doing a few keagle excercises the day of, and before hand relaxes the muscles too. I also request extra lubricant because a tiny blob isn't enough for me to feel comfortable. Hope that helps ❤️

If it's pain and bleeding after or during then yes. Unfortunately it's normal. I generally just curl in a ball with painkillers and about 24 hours later, it's MUCH better. If the pain however persists longer than a day or two I'd suggest you contact your doc.
