Is An Apendectomy Required With A Laproscopic Procedure? Asking For A Friend...
its not required, I had mine taken out in my last surgery and I actually had a cancerous tumor inside it so I'm glad they did. if they didn't I would be going through chemo in a year.
Anyways if it is suspected that it had endo on it, it would be best to get it taken out and it will save some problems in the future with doctors thinking you could have appendicitis when its an endo flare. I'm sure we have all had our fare share of CT scans with that suspicion and it will save money on that end also.
It isn't required, it seems more of an individual surgeons decision whether to include it in their process. There is some research in the last few years that the appendix harbors good bacteria and helps with gut bacteria balance, which is important for endometriosis, but if you have any pain in your appendix, any disease on it or near it, deeply infiltrative endometriosis in any location, or any signs of inflammation of the appendix then I would have it removed.
In my case, the endo was extensive, but limited to my Peritoneum & the external surface of my uterus & uterosacral ligaments & one ovary, I didn't have DIE or endo of any abdominal organs & no inflammation of the appendix, so my Endometriosis specialist surgeon did not remove mine.
I think this is a really good question to ask her. I would have let her chop off a leg if that's what I needed to finally get some answers and relief but don't hesitate to have a chat with her about it. The cedars sinai messaging app is a great resource for questions, or if you want some additional consult time you can schedule a follow up with her before deciding. She would definitely want you to be fully informed and confident in your choosing your specialist. Best wishes!!
Mine was removed in 2005. It's how I got my definitive endometriosis diagnosis.
Dr. Arrington said when the appendix is involved, it means the disease is deep-seeded and usually a later stage.
