Has Anyone Asked About Accommodations In The Workplace?

A MyEndometriosisTeam Member asked a question 💭

I work in a corporate office setting with typical cubical seating and office attire dress code. Lately I’ve been having a lot of flare ups on work days, leading to anxiety and stress. I often leave halfway through the shift to go home to change into less restrictive clothing and to use a heating pad. I was just curious if anyone has experienced similar situations and if you discussed this with HR? I did speak to HR and they said to take time off or go to a part-time position for flexibility. People who don't have endo don't realize the powerful psychological component.

Thank you for the advice. I need to speak with HR again to address this now that I know more.

Hi Kayla, You can apply for intermittent FMLA for a serious health condition. Your doctor would just need to attest to the estimated times you would need to be out for flare ups. Your employer should have supplied you with a written notice of your rights and responsibilities under FMLA. Giving your employer benefit of the doubt, they may not know or understand that what you have is a chronic condition. It’s not like a broken bone that you have surgery for and it’s magically “fixed.” (It can be since everyone is different I guess. But sounds like right now you need to address the flare ups which surgery may/may not help.) FMLA is job protection for you- this way an employer cannot fire you, move you to part time or force time off (which could affect your qualifying for health benefits) for attendance issues related to your health condition. FMLA is 12 weeks of unpaid, protected time off- it can be used continuous or intermittent. I would recommend a second conversation with HR.

I completely agree. I am in the US and they mentioned FMLA if I am needing to have another surgery. I will check out the sites! I haven’t tried a tens machine but I will, thanks for the suggestion.

I've been given the option to work from home during flare ups, apart from that - nothing. Have you tried a tens machine under your clothes? That has helped me massively
