I've had that. Doctor told me it's old blood. It is one of the endometriosis symptoms. I've read that this can happen when the blood gets caught and doesn't fully shed. The caught blood can cause additional pain and swelling. Retrograde period is one of the endometriosis theories and retrograde periods have this symptom in common with Endo. Anyways, I told my doctor I bled brown for ten days straight and all my doctor did was do an ultrasound and shrug because she found nothing on the scans. That was before I was diagnosed, but suspected. Hopefully this helps with any fear your may have.

I’ve almost always bled brown blood at some point during my period. Normally at the end for several days. But sometimes in the middle too. And other times, always when I was trying birth control, for much longer than just 5-7 days.

I have endometriosis but my doctors did not attribute this as a symptom since it can also just happen. If it’s abnormal for you, worth checking out-or keeping an eye on.

I don’t know of a way to avoid it. Except to maybe get on or off birth control or change it if you haven’t had this before and it appeared after birth control but it’s not dangerous or anything. It is old blood.
