Is A Transvaginal Ultrasound Worth It?
It seems unlikely that it would change the course of treatment since it can’t detect most endo. It sounds horribly uncomfortable for someone with pelvic pain which would probably increase pelvic floor tension but it’s recommended by so many. Is it worth it? Any suggestions for how to make it less uncomfortable?
Hi! I had one and it was uncomfortable but not at all as bad as I expected (for context I'm 21, a virgin with Endometriosis, Chronic Pelvic Pain Syndrome and IBS). It didn't find any Endo but it did mean that during the next appointments I could say I've tried everything and helped me push for a laparoscopy which did diagnose me. I think it helped that my nurse who did the transvaginal was really nice and friendly, the room was dimmed and she was really respectful.
How are you feeling about the idea now, a few days later? Hope you find some answers and help x
Thanks for sharing. No it’s in a week. For me it’s less about actual changing what they do and more about tricking mu body into thinking it’s me doing it so I don’t tense up so much. And also making sure they go slow. Since having a pelvic exam last year I know when the doctor says I will feel some pressure that translates to pain which makes me tense up which makes it a lot worse. Pelvic floor physical therapy on the other hand is okay because the whole point is to help me not tense up so the pressure (pain) isn’t so bad. I kinda wish they could do it sooner. I definitely sometimes wonder if I would ever notice if I got a more urgent serious condition because pain is so common for me.
Hi Taylor C, have you done it yet?
In my humble opinion, I feel the angles might differ and what you don’t want is you having to repeat the process again and it’s blamed on you. If it is painful and uncomfortable for you , the likelihood that you’ll be able to follow their directions as to how to move /bend the probe is quite slim.
My own transvaginal scans are horrendous and I always have to be given diazepam in advance along side my regular pain meds in order to be able to go through with it. With some women even with stage 4 endo the transV scan is barely even uncomfortable, so you might be good. I do hope it goes well. My endo flares come up with new things when it wants lol so it’s difficult sometimes to know when to panic, so I always give it a couple of days and if not getting better even by one percent then I can speak to my Dr. I once had pancreatitis and put the new pain down to an endo flare. It was apparently quite bad and was just lucky . Was in for 10days. So it’s always worth checking out abnormal new things, you’re on the right path
I scheduled it but asked if I could hold the transducer the whole time which they agreed to.
