IUD For Endometriosis Symptoms.

A MyEndometriosisTeam Member asked a question 💭

I’m curious to know if anyone has had any relief with their endometriosis symptoms with and IUD. I’m considering all my options and looking for pros and cons of things. I have been suggested IUD in the past. I do have a Dr apt next month with my Dr to discuss.

I tried an IUD for about a year and it personally did not help but I’ve heard a lot of stories from women that it did wonders on their symptoms… unfortunately I think it affects everyone differently

I had I believe a Mirena IUD put in because I was sick of remembering pills. If not Mirena, it was another long lasting one with progesterone only.
After I started it I was bleeding mildly to moderately for a month and having awful cramps on and off, I think mood swings too. I had never cramped badly from periods or any form of birth control pill before, or even the combined pill which had caused a month of heavy bleeding. At one point the IUD pain got so severe I felt like I was dying for over an hour, so I pulled it out myself.
I cannot personally recommend them.
I switched back to the progesterone pill for years and am now looking into how to get off hrt fully and control endo without it.

Thanks for sharing @A MyEndometriosisTeam Member. I haven't had the pain issues you experienced with the Mirena, but I have other side effects -- weight gain, hair growth, and depression -- that I really want gone from my life. Is your doctor supportive of getting off hrt and managing symptoms other ways? My doctor is not supportive of me taking out the Mirena. I'm thinking of getting a second opinion.

@A MyEndometriosisTeam Member thanks for sharing this because my doctor is insisting that this is the most helpful way using Mirena. I'm afraid of having to go through the same thing and be worse off then better. Birth controls have never worked for me and had only caused unnecessary weight gain, pain, more cysts, etc... thanks for sharing and wish you the best of luck with your journey with Endo.
