Hello! I’m New To This Site And Wanted To Ask If Anyone Has Had A Hysterectomy Or Partial Hysterectomy Because Of Their Endo?

A MyEndometriosisTeam Member asked a question 💭
Cincinnati, OH

I have had endo for the past few years (maybe even longer) and it has gotten progressively worse. Now I am scheduled for surgery next week for a partial hysterectomy. I’m a bit nervous about it and making such a big, irreversible decision.
Any insight or thoughts are greatly appreciated! Thank you!

Hi welcome! I'm sorry your endo pain is getting worse. I'm not sure what you are getting the hyst for, but while hysterectomy can treat uterus issues like adenomyosis & other things, it is not effective for treating endo itself. There is a lot of research proving this that has been around for a while but doctors are not updated on. I suggest looking into excision surgery & getting a consult with an excision surgeon. Check out Nancy's Nook Facebook group for links to studies & endo specialists, or I can point you some other info sources if you are interested 😊

Thank you both so much! I did not know any of this.
I have messaged my doctor and am hoping to get some clarification from her early next week. I may postpone my surgery until I have more understanding.
Thank you so very much!!

@A MyEndometriosisTeam Member I made this comment not seeing yours, lol! @A MyEndometriosisTeam Member that is actually considered an old myth now, since the endo tissue is actually a little different & not the same tissue. It's now thought that we are born with endo, but of course, there is still research to be done. But they have found endo in infants & fetuses & once it implants, it doesn't spread to other places but just gets deeper & causes adhesions. So excision surgeons have been able to remove the entire endo lesions & have it not return! If you look up those topics in Nancy's Nook, it will explain it much better than I can lol. If you ask your doctor, they might not know about excision unless they are trained in it & it sounds like they are not. Sometimes they even use the terms interchangeably making it even more confusing. If they are telling you to get a hyst to avoid getting endo again, that's a sign your doctor is not a specialist. Only a handful of doctors are able to excise endo through years of additional training & skill. Sorry for the long message! It's never too late to cancel if you have serious doubts about it. Maybe you can find an excision specialist near you & get a consult! 🙂 Hope you find info that helps.

Thank you for the information! What I mean by uterine lining is that when I research what are causes of Endometriosis, it says that often it is the endometrium lining in the uterus that is shed during a period going out through the fallopian tubes instead of the cervix and vagina and then attaching to other organs and turning into Endo.
Therefore, if I do the excision surgery, won't I still have issues because I still have my uterus and the lining coming out through my fallopian tubes every month?
I'm just so confused by all of this and am nervous because I am set to have a hysterectomy next Friday and want to make sure I'm doing the right thing. And I just found this support group for Endo and the Nancy's Nook Facebook page.
Thank you so much for any additional info you can provide! And Happy 4th!!

Thank you all so much! I am looking into excision now and asked my doctor about it (just waiting for a reply).
After thinking about this more, I’m wondering if I will still have endo pain each month after an excision because it is coming from my uterus lining that is shed every month (that’s what I’ve been told).
I am thankful for all these resources and support as this has been a struggle for some time and I do not feel well supported or informed by my Dr.
Thank you!
