Ever Have OBGYN Refuse To Give You A Referral?

A MyEndometriosisTeam Member asked a question 💭
Mesa, AZ

My OBGYN diagnosed me with adenomyosis. Pap smear revealed I have endometrial tissue in my cervix. I have many symptoms that are congruent with endo. I found a pelvic pain MD specialist that can perform laparoscopy to definitively diagnose me. My OBGYN states they cannot do a referral because they are "minimally invasive surgical group". I don't really understand this. How am I suppose to learn what is happening inside my body and accurately have my condition assessed? I am so angry that I… read more

I second the advice above to see an excision specialist, excision is the only treatment that's effective & you'll need a doctor with the right skills. I believe you do not need a referral for an excision specialist, & some do free consults! ❤❤

I agree! Ask your primary to do the referral!! If no one will, which yes I've had this happen to me, so you call your insurance and depending on who you have they sometimes don't even need you to place a referral if they do then ask them to send your Dr a fax stating that you need the proper referral placed. Sometimes that alone will scare the Dr into playing the referral. I just don't understand why the Dr won't! Makes no sense, unless they feel like they can do your surgery for you?

Hey Violet, I’m so sorry that you’re dealing with this. Can you possibly have your primary care provider give you the referral? I could be wrong but finding endometrial tissue on the cervix doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s adenomyosis, I had endometriosis covering my cervix and I also have adenomyosis but it was endo on my cervix. It’s so hard when an obgyn is dismissive. I definitely recommend finding an excision specialist and strongly advocating for a referral.

I did find a specialist and asked the OBGYN to fax the referral and records to his office. The specialist was asking for the referral. I was not prepared for OBGYN to say she would not refer. I have constant pain in my rectum and a weak bladder, along with other symptoms of endo. I want to know what is going on inside my body. I guess this why on average it takes 6-7 years for a woman to get properly diagnosed. These ridiculous roadblocks. Everyone gave wonderful suggestions- thanks so much!
